Verdict

A low key opener with Mark Johnston's sole runner on the card KING OF AXUM selected to take it ahead of Brisbane and Niran. The most experienced of the quintet set to face the starter, King of Axum steps up in trip for his third outing. A winner on debut at Doncaster, a blunder at the start on his follow up at York in a much better race saw him never in contention, but a mistake free exit from a good stalls' position can put him in a strong position. Both his previous runs were over the minimum trip, but the six furlongs shouldn't pose a problem. Brisbane is entitled to improve on a decent fourth in a better Newbury maiden; breeding would suggest he'll relish a quicker surface than he encountered then. Niran is aiming to follow up a Newmarket win first time out for the in-form Brittain yard. All three have some fancy entries later in the year, unlike the two debutants England and Excellent Guest. They could be absolutely anything, and any market support should be noted. However, we'll support King of Axum.
