In depth

Verdict

A return to Ripon can see SANDS CROONER bounce back to form and see off the speedster Ridley Didley and Kyzer Chief. The last-named was well-backed when beaten behind Sir Geoffrey last time out at the track but he ran well for a long way. Eventually he was quite comfortably overhauled however and he may need some assistance from the grader before he can win. We prefer Sands Crooner who was second on that day and he looks fairly treated on his old form. His latest run at Nottingham didn't work out but he has a nice draw here and can win with Paul Mulrennan on-board. Ridley Didley is one of the speediest horses in training and he ran a blinder at Nottingham last time ahead of Sands Crooner. After just a modest start he rocketed to the front and was only overhauled in the closing stages by a well-handicapped and in-form rival. One worry however is his tendency to drift to his left but with a rail to help him here he could prove a hard hare to catch. Atlantic Beach is a course winner but his form looks patchy; as a result he is now well-handicapped and the booking of Silvestre De Sousa is a good one. Cutting Comments caught the eye with his good run last month after a long time on the sidelines, Nomoreblondes should be cherry ripe after two good runs this year, whilst Musical Bridge tries blinkers for the first time and is attractively handicapped. Piste's form last year went downhill, Spirit Of Coniston is now just 1lb higher than his last win at Catterick, whilst Ryedane needs a market check off his light weight. Intriguing fayre to end the card but we are happy to plump for Sands Crooner. [Nic Doggett]
