Verdict

GILLBURG is clearly vulnerable but hasn't done a great deal wrong of late and can gain a deserved success from Durham Reflection and Colepeper. Kevin Ryan's charge started the season in a promising fashion but failed to progress from his first start to his second and was sent off to be gelded as a result. The application of headgear has resulted in greater consistency with three second place finishes in nurseries and the return to maiden company could see him gain that elusive success. Durham Reflection's 8lb rise for his latest run means that he only has a couple of pounds to find on the book if the handicapper's assessment is accurate; neither have run on very soft ground but parts of both horses' pedigrees offer hope that they'll handle it. Benny The Bear shaped promisingly on quick ground in a Nottingham maiden but this contest looks a little stronger and Mark Johnston's newcomer, Colepeper, may emerge as a bigger threat. The 115,000 guineas purchase is the first foal of a decent middle distance winner and there is a concern as to whether this trip could be on the sharp side although the trainer's juveniles operate at a twenty nine per cent strike rate here. He has to be feared but Gillburg may not find many better opportunities.
