Verdict
Son of Thunder can beat The Rip, with Zonic Boom best of the remainder. Son of Thunder has leading claims here, having already won over the course and distance this season. That was off a mark of 57 in May, and the Michael Dods' inmate is still not badly treated after a somewhat unlucky follow-up bid at Pontefract next time. Jockey Philip Makin appeared to give him too much to do, as he came home strongly from the rear, and it has to said that he also did not get the best of runs in the finishing straight. The form of his earlier victory here has worked out well, with three of those behind coming out to score subsequently, and with Tony Culhane taking over in the saddle, he should be the one to beat. The Rip so nearly came good at the third time of asking this term when a close second to Mister Arjay at Newcastle 12 days ago. That was in an amateur riders' event, and although this is tougher, Tim Easterby's charge should be there or thereabouts. The four-year-old has been hard to place but remains on a favourable mark at present, and will surely be placed too good effect soon. Zonic Boom never figured at Newcastle on his latest outing, but has won twice this term, including at Goodwood. He does sometimes tend to miss the break, and cannot be relied upon to take a hand. Son of Thunder sets the standard and can again another course success.
