Verdict

Favourites have a poor record in the Thirsk Hunt Cup and unless the rains arrive in plenty of time the jolly in most forecast lists, Medici Pearl, looks like being another losing market leader, and we prefer the claims of one of Dandy Nicholls' trio BENCOOLEN. The Daylami gelding stays 10f and should get the strong pace that he will undoubtedly need here. He does have to overcome a car park draw, but Adrian Nicholls can kick him out and gets across somewhere near the front for a sustained effort up the home straight and we are prepared to side with him. Medici Pearl would be more strongly considered if the ground turned soft, while stablemate Charlie Tipple prefers it quicker and may well be a player from stall nine over a trip that is ideal. On both counts, however, the lean spell for their trainer Tim Easterby remains a concern. Both The Osteopath and stablemate Osteopathic Remedy would want cut in the ground to be seen to best effect, while Flawed Genius comes from a stable going well enough and has his easiest task at the weights for some time, so he is worth a market check. Wasp can still be competitive from today's mark if he copes with a poor draw, while Just Bond has the inside rail and some very solid form in his favour and is much respected. Bencoolen can land the feature.
