A number of these go into unchartered territory as far as distance is concerned so we will stick with the proven staying power of DROP THE HAMMER with Eightdaysaweek and The Last Don the obvious dangers. Tom Tate's yard are in good nick and having been dropped into plating class, Drop The Hammer gleaned plenty of confidence and beat some progressive sorts in a handicap at Haydock. There could be more to come on that evidence. Eightdaysaweek has shown around here in the past and it could be wise to put a thick black line through her below par showing at Goodwood on the turf. The Last Don certainly isn't bred for these trips but David Lanagan's charge was staying on willingly over 1m4f at Kempton and has not been harshly treated by the handicapper for that effort. Veiled has not especially sparkled on her racecourse outings though anything Sir Mark Prescott steps up in trip is worth a look in the market. Kidson has operated soundly in two very bad staying handicaps and could be the one to prosper if any of the market leaders fluff their lines. There seems to be no shortage of these shocking staying events at present but Drop The Hammer could prove the saving grace.
