In depth

Verdict

VIRIGINIA HALL catches our eye against Mahiki and Gold Crusher. Sir Mark Prescott's filly is not short of early pace but as a daughter of Medicean, one would imagine that a step beyond five furlongs should not be a problem. Her most recent effort saw her post a fair time when second to a useful inmate from the Eve Johnson Houghton yard. Mahiki has been in rude health this summer. There are few doubts about the ability to handle the surface as his two wins have obtained at Southwell, but this assignment represents a big step up in grade. Gold Crusher was well supported on debut at Newmarket. Robert Cowell's sprinters are running well at the moment so it would be no surprise to see this maiden run well. Fiorio Vinctiore was thought good enough for a tilt at the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot though he will have to give away a winners' penalty all around. Southwark Newshawk is an honest sort who will give a good account though probably will not be good enough. Virginia Hill is our idea of the most likely victor.
