In depth

Verdict

Wunderwood can prove an apt winner, with Collier Hill and Lightning Strike seen as his main rivals. Having enjoyed much success in the past with Persian Punch, who won this himself in 2002, David Elsworth would like nothing better than to capture the prize, and is sure to have Wunderwood well primed. The seven-year-old goes well on a right-handed track, and has been in fine form at Goodwood this summer. He was produced late to be just touched off by Soulacroix last time and looks set to give another good account, the only proviso being that he handles the cut in the ground. He gets a handy 9lb from Collier Hill who has a top portfolio, having won the Irish St Leger last year, and more recently having finished third in Group 1 company in Germany. He will be very much in the shake-up, while of the rest, Lightning Strike makes most appeal, although the three-year-old has it to do against those two tough older rivals. We return to Wunderwood as the answer.
