The lightly raced pair of Isengard and Royal Twist are potentially interesting in this big-field handicap but preference is for the proven form of The Gambler who is taken to supplement his recent Redcar claiming race success. Claimed out of Anne Duffield's stable after that contest where he beat 18 rivals, the son of First Trump makes his debut for trainer Paul Johnson this evening and looks well treated for his handicap debut off a mark of 63. Brian Meehan's Isengard is less exposed than most after just three starts but looked badly in need of the run on his reappearance and may just need this as well. Tom Tate's Royal Twist lost no caste in defeat on his most recent start when a close fifth behind Karaoke at Nottingham and, having been dropped 3lbs since, has to be respected. The booking of Kevin Darley for John Quinn's Winthorpe, who has slipped to an attractive mark, catches the eye and he is another to consider, along with Mark Johnston's East Riding, but we are happy to stick with The Gambler.
