    In depth

    Verdict

Ashmal has shown signs of ability and John Dunlop's filly deserves to get her head in front over a trip and on ground that suits but she is becoming expensive to follow and preference is for Godolphin's newcomer Arqaam, with Passing True rated the pick of the remainder. The selection is bred to be useful and the son of Machiavellian would not need to be anything out the ordinary to make a winning debut in a race that should not take a great deal of winning. Howard Johnson's Macaroni Gin has not progressed as much as may have been anticipated this term and a bigger danger is likely to come from Mark Johnston's Passing True, who should do better on this faster surface today. Ashmal has the best form among those to have raced previously but Arqaam may be worth chancing on his belated debut and he gets the vote.
