CURLEW was backed off the boards on his debut and with some of the yard's horses improving markedly from first to second runs he is marginally preferred to Gordy Bee and Splendorinthegrass. The selection started as the 5/4 favourite for a Hamilton race in June but was a bitter disappointment, pulling too hard and fading away tamely. However he had obviously been showing plenty at home and if he settles better for the experienced Richard Hills then he shouldn't be far away. Gordy Bee seems to be improving with his racing and ran quite well at Brighton last time, Park Lane's official rating arguably flatters him somewhat and he has had plenty of good chances, whilst Sabi Star will have competition for the lead and needs to pull out more. Splendorinthegrass was well-fancied last time out at Thirsk on his first run of the year and although he may have lost a few fans, he shaped as if ready for this step up in trip and this brother to Etlaala who cost current connections 160,000 guineas at the Newmarket Sales in May must be considered a major player. Cactus Curtsey and Fiancee both shaped with plenty of promise on their first starts. Maid Of Stone, Matilda Poliport and Primera Vista are all likely to need more time, and so it is Curlew who we will give another chance to.
