SWILLY FERRY is selected ahead of Awzaan and Sabii Sands. Barry Hills' charge was sent off favourite for the Brocklesby in April and ran respectably to finish third but took a step backwards when beaten at Chester in May. He scored readily last month on the polytrack from Diamond Johnny G who is due to take his chance in the July Stakes earlier on the card. The runner-up's subsequent run in the Norfolk gives the Lingfield maiden form a welcome boost. Awzaan made every yard to win at Hamilton despite running a little green; he can be expected to improve and is a nice prospect. Lady Pattern beat an average field of fillies in good style at Newbury but is likely to find this tougher. Farmer Giles made his debut in the same maiden as Art Connoiseur had the previous year but had shown little until winning readily at Ripon. It's not difficult to pick holes in his form but it may just have taken a while for the penny to drop. There was no fluke about Navajo Chief's defeat of Footstepsofspring at Windsor, after which connections were considering a tilt at the Coventry so he has to be to the fore of our thoughts. Sabii Sands justified a short price readily at Goodwood despite not appearing to be fully wound up. His stable has huge strength in depth in this division and he looks above average but lacks any big race entries. An easy surface will favour The Human League who impressed in soft ground at Newcastle and holds a Gimcrack entry whilst Amary comes here rather than tackle the Group 2 Superlative Stakes tomorrow. The market may help sort them out with the majority of the field open to considerable improvement but, at this stage, Swilly Ferry is the pick.
