Traditionally a strong betting heat, the Bunbury Cup provides Ballast with a solid opportunity to shine at a fair price. Polar Magic, Partners In Jazz and Mine are others to consider, while last year's winner Material Witness has a theoretical chance off only a 1lb higher mark. However, Willie Muir's charge has not been in the best of form this season and comes here with a little to prove. Partners In Jazz had no luck in running last time and his chance was ruined as a consequence. He is weighted to reverse placings with Marshman, though and David Barron's charge should not be far away if he runs up to his best. Mine loves these big fields and is a consistent type that can be relied upon to give his all. However, he has been struggling with the handicapper this season and, as a hold-up horse, he needs all the luck he can muster to get a run near the finish. Others make more appeal on these terms. Polar Magic has to be considered off his current mark. He is one of the least exposed in the field and a big run can be expected from him. However, he was a little disappointing last time and has more on his plate here. Therefore, we go with Ballast on this occasion. Luca Cumani's charge had several of these behind him when he finished second in the Royal Hunt Cup and is expected to be the one they all have to beat if, as hoped, he repeats the effort today.
