        Verdict

The pin comes down on Very Wise ahead of a whole host of other possibles, headed by the likes of Tanzanite, Gentleman's Deal, Rio Riva and Blythe Knight. The last named was successful 12 months ago and is only 3lb higher in the weights this time, but his low draw in stall five is off-putting. Nevertheless John Quinn expects him to run a big race. Likewise Rio Riva who limbered up with a racecourse gallop at Southwell last week, pleasing connections in the process. Once again though, if the pace is on the stands side, he may struggle to get competitive. Our idea of the winner is Very Wise who prepped up for this with a win at Lingfield last time. Prior to that he had put his head in the adjoining stall on the off at Wolverhampton, losing all chance in the process, so it is to be hoped that he does not do the same thing today. Drawn in stall 16, he bids to give Willie Haggas a second Lincoln success to add to that of High Low 15 years ago. David Arbuthnot sent out the 2002 hero Zucchero and has high hopes with Tanzanite who will strip fitter for his third in the Lincoln Trial at Wolverhampton, his first outing since September. Winter Derby hero Gentleman's Deal is the so called 'handicap snip' as Mick Easterby's charge can line up off a mark of 93 including his 5lb penalty, compared to his all-weather rating of 108. Any rain would hinder his chances, but otherwise he is definitely one to consider. The list is endless really, but we shall side with Very Wise.
