The unexposed Sparkwell showed plenty of promise on his only start to date and, with his yard back in cracking form, he can get the better of Midnight Lace and Samson Quest. The majority of the rest appear to be destined for Banded Stakes racing and are not hard to overlook. Samson Quest is tried in blinkers for the first time in the hope that he can recapture something like the form he showed at Bath earlier in the season. He does have experience of the trip but looks vulnerable to an improving type. So, in truth, does Midnight Lace, who despite having the best form on show, has not really set the world alight. The fact that she sets the standard from a mark of 63 tells its own story and it will have to go down as a bad race if there is not something lurking in there with more improvement to come. Which is where we expect Sparkwell to come into his own. The form of his debut looks solid in the context of this race and it will not be surprising to see Sparkwell win this with his head in his chest and go on to much better things.
