Verdict

An absolute pin-stickers here, and there should be some good each-way value to be had in this consolation race for those that didn't make it into the Stewards' Cup, but we think that Dandy Nicholls can land it with NORTHERN DARE, who's marginally preferred to Everymanforhimself and Harrison George. The yard are sending out five of the 24 who are set to face the starter, and although Northern Dare has a high draw, previous winners of this have overcome that handicap. A decent winner in a Pontefract handicap last time out, he may have to find a little further improvement to beat some of these. A repeat of that quick getaway will be important too, as he's been a little tardy at times. He was 8th in this race last year, just behind Harrison George who had a big pull in the weights then. They're level today, despite Northern Dare having a three pounds penalty. The other Nicholls' runners are Parisian Pyramid (and it may be significant that son Adrian's on board), Indian Trail, Van Bossed, and Burnwynd Boy. and they have won this sprint in five of the last renewals. Harrison George looks the pick of the Richard Fahey runners, although he's not won for more than a year. Sunrise Safari, Johannes and bottom-weight Steelcut are his other entrants. Everymanforhimself, like Northern Dare, has a high draw and top weight to carry which could prove a double burden too much. The blinkers stay on Kevin Ryan's charge, who keeps finding one too good. Plenty of these are likely to attract support at some decent prices, but our pin has come down on the side of Northern Dare.
