Verdict

With doubts concerning both the trip and ground for Godolphin's Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Dubawi, preference is for Motivator, who is taken to confirm Dante Superiority over The Geezer. The York race is often the most reliable Derby trial and this year's renewal may be no exception with the selection, the winner of the Group1 Racing Post Trophy as a juvenile, quickening well approaching the distance and staying on strongly to hold David Elsworth's colt by a length-and-a-half. The son of Montjeu is entitled to come on for the run, should have no difficulty with the extra furlong and a half or the ground and his last two runs make him the form choice. The Geezer has to be respected and his jockey Richard Quinn, who could have ridden several other runners in the race, is confident about his chances of reversing the form but there is no reason why he should do so as there is probably more to come from the winner. Aidan O'Brien runs no fewer than four horses with Oratorio, who finished fourth in the 2,000 Guineas and an eye-catching second behind Dubawi at The Curragh, an interesting contender stepping up in trip to a distance that may suit him better than the mile that he has been racing over previously this term. However, O'Brien has given stable jockey Kieren Fallon the mount on Gypsy King and that could be significant. Like the selection, the son of Sadler's Wells is less exposed than some of these after just two career starts; having won his maiden in good style as a juvenile, he showed improved form to land Chester's Dee Stakes despite being given, by his own admission, a poor ride form Kieren Fallon. There is undoubtedly a lot more to come from Gypsy King but the possibility is that the Derby may come a month too soon for him as he needs to improve considerably again to trouble the selection. Grand Central is probably better than his latest effort in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial behind Fracas would suggest and he looks to be the best of the remainder of O'Brien's quartet but is far from certain to reverse form with his conqueror there. Kong and Walk In The Park are closely matched on Lingfield Derby Trial form but neither really good enough on that evidence. Chester Vase winner Hattan and Predominate victor Unfurled look to be short of the required standard and a safer bet looks to be Motivator, who has done nothing wrong in his career and is taken to land the greatest prize in racing for his adoring owners The Royal Ascot Racing Club.
