Verdict
A fast and furious renewal in prospect and there may be some value in taking Airwave on with last season's winner Malhub, with Three Points, Nayyir and Twilight Blues others for the short list. There can be no doubting that Airwave put in one of the most impressive performances seen in a sprint race for quite some time on her reappearance at Sandown and she will be a worthy favourite for this race on that performance alone. However, the facts remain that although she gave five lengths at the start of the Temple Stakes, she benefited greatly from the way the race unfolded in front of her, and was barely extended as she made up the ground before the half way stage. She is unlikely to have such a luxury in this much larger field and, as Henry Candy found out with Kyllachy last season, Ascot can be a dangerous place for a horse that can meet trouble in running. A safer option therefore could be Malhub, who has an ideal draw next to the stands-rail and he will love the predicted fast ground. He underwent a wind operation before the start of last of last season and maintained a top-class level of form after winning a conditions races at Yarmouth on his reappearance. He then had a number of these trailing in his wake when winning this race, before finishing as runner up in the three remaining Group 1's for sprinters last term. Three Points should also be capable of getting involved in the shake up but has looked vulnerable to a rival with a turn of foot at this trip. The same sentiments apply to Nayyir, who may just be a better horse over slightly further. The participation of Bahamian Pirate, Captain Rio and Danger Over will depend on the weather and none of the trio will take their chance in the absence of rain. Choisir would also have to be considered but he will do very well to supplement his Kings Stand victory from stall 20. Therefore it is best left to Malhub, who may just be able to overturn Airwave at an each way price.
