In depth

Verdict

A big enough field to consider for this handicap and we take the well drawn Smart Ass to score, with Apply Dapply, Way To The Stars and Turkish Sultan others for the short list. Smart Ass goes well at this trip and his yard have had a winner this week, so he should be able to maintain the sort of form that has seen him runner up on his last two starts at Yarmouth and Newcastle. The ground is a slight concern, but we think he will just have the edge. Apply Dapply did it tough in winning a 6f Pontefract maiden on heavy and only just failed to follow up on good ground at Lingfield over this trip next time. Perhaps she didnt take to Southwell when last seen out in July, but she has to overcome a break now and for that reason is opposed. Way To The Stars went well over 7f on soft at Leicester last time and is due to go up 1lb from tomorrow, so should not be far away again off this mark and could prove better than Turkish Sultan, who is well drawn but has yet to convince on soft ground. But Smart Ass also has a good berth from stall two here and can take advantage.
