In depth

Verdict

A very ordinary race kick starts the card at Southwell can go to Pawn In Life, who loves his racing around here and is readily preferred over Ballyrush and Pharoah's Gold, who have both been hard to win with lately. That said, a close eye should be kept on the market where Ballyrush is concerned, as he has some fair form to his name at a modest level and he does not have much to find in this company if he is fit and ready after his long lay off. Emperor Cat is on a long losing run and has plenty to prove on only his second try at a mile. Paul Blockley's charge is not hard to overlook. Similar comments apply to Un Autre Espere, who has only beaten a total of five horses in his last six starts and his connections much be wondering what it is like to have a 'fun horse' on their hands. Pharoah's Gold should appreciate the step up in trip and has claims on the very best of his form. However, Pawn In Life looks a far more reliable option, as his overall profile creates the impression that he is the most consistent of the bad bunch drawn together in the opener.
