    Verdict

Turkus Quercus ran with much promise on her debut and is much preferred to both Ripping and Sirens Gift in this opener. John Dunlop rarely has first time out winners, so it was encouraging to see the grey daughter of Tactical Cat attract support before finishing a fine second to Bridge it Jo at Nottingham, where but for hanging it could have well been a winning debut. Improvement is guaranteed and the defection of Queen Mary sixth Vital Statistics from the overnight declarations gives the race a much softer look. Ripping showed promise on her debut - beaten nine lengths behind Norfolk winner Dutch Art - before disappointing in the Queen Mary. This is a lower class race but any rain will damper the chances of this Green Desert progeny. Sirens Gift has problems with temperament - she was withdrawn on her debut - and finished just behind Ripping on her debut at Windsor. She was nibbled at in the market and looks certain to improve. There is plenty of quality on show here but the vote goes to Turkus Quercus
