In depth

Verdict

It might be worth taking a chance with the unexposed Wessex against some more experienced rivals, the best of who look to be Highland Reel and Cal Mac. The selection beat some well-bred newcomers when winning a York maiden earlier in the month and has been allotted a mark of 89 for his debut in handicap-company, It is difficult to know how well treated the son of Gone West is but few of his rivals make much appeal and he looks worth a bet. It will be interesting to see how Summer View goes here having been tenderly handled by Richard Hughes, who picked up an early holiday courtesy of the Goodwood stewards last month. Highland Reel again runs over a mile having shown his best form this term over 1m2f and a bigger danger may be Hugh Morrison's Warwick winner Cal Mac, who was far from disgraced behind the useful Akshar at Goodwood last time. Dumaran probably wants more cut in the ground and, with little encouragement to come from Cap Ferrat's recent return at York, Wessex looks the safest option.
