In depth

Verdict

Messrs Hannon and Channon can dominate again here with the former's ROYAL EXCHANGE just preferred to Fight The Chance, with Perfect Pastime also considered; this time experience can dominate. Our pick disappointed many when long odds-on last time but can be forgiven that run on ground possibly softer than ideal. Prior to that he'd taken a very narrow second behind Klammer, who then won again before taking fifth behind a Hannon juvenile at Royal Ascot, and that form rates the benchmark here. His effort in defeat last time wasn't abhorrent either as the winner looked smart and he pulled five lengths clear of the third, so with this step up in trip sure to suit he'll take some stopping. Fight The Chance needs to improve to contend but should do just that following a promising start. His dam won over this trip as a juvenile so it was surprising to see him outpaced before staying on over slightly further at Haydock, but we'll put that down to inexperience and it looked a nice maiden, so he's expected to better than fifth-placed finish. Perfect Pastime finished second to Major Dude, another product of the Hannon juvenile conveyor belt, on his debut at Windsor. The winner was most impressive that day so Walter Swinburn's horse effectively won the other race for second and although he'll need to step forward he should, in keeping with most runners from the yard. St Oswald wasn't too far behind in that same contest and it'll be interesting to see which horse progresses the most,. Cape Rambler is from a family the trainer knows well so despite costing little has to be of interest; Henry Candy has sent one juvenile here this year, Dinkum Diamond, and he won well. Manasha is fascinating having unseated Ian Mongan when well backed to make a winning debut at Lingfield. She's only got one eye and may be highly-strung judging by those antics, but equally there could well be an engine there. Either way, our inclination in this contest is to side with substance and Royal Exchange offers just that.
