In depth

Verdict

Minister Of State can get the better of Escape Clause, Villa Sonata and Great Orator, with Sophie'jo worth a mention. This is not too bad a maiden, boasting a strong sourthern entry, with Minister Of State out to boost the Wood Ditton form. Michael Jarvis's charge only found the highly-rated Petrovich too good at Newmarket, but then failed to go one better when only third behind Bold Alaska there next time. The faster ground here will suit this full brother to Medicean who can get the losses back. Escape Clause was odds-on at Haydock last time but got bogged down in the heavy ground and could only finish third. He too will improve on the faster going and is on the short-list along with Villa Sonata who will appreciate the step up to a mile. She makes more appeal than stablemate Oasis Flower who will need even further on breeding. Great Orator is a well-bred individual who ran well on both starts over 10 furlongs as a juvenile. This drop back in trip will suit and he will certainly be placed to score soon if not today. Henry Cecil always used to like to win maidens here, and Sophie'jo lines up with plenty of experience, while Barry Hills, who won this last year with Gringo, has a double-pronged challenge with Jihaaz and Evening. There should be plenty of winners emerging from this maiden, but today can belong to Minister Of State.
