In depth

Verdict

A trappy affair to say the least and Orpen Quest narrowly edges out Wood Fern and Emperors Well. Orpen Quest is at least in some measure of form as a recent victory at Warwick indicates although the step up to nine furlongs is something of a leap in the dark. Wood Fern ran creditably at Bath on his most recent outing without threatening the principals and is sure to be staying on albeit at one pace. Emperors Well can front run and this attribute could be welcome in the event of no-one else taking the initiative. Gala Sunday is partnered by Serena Brotherton so the market is accordingly watched. Friends Hope has not won since 2005 and is still well in versus her better marks on the polytrack, while banded stakes graduate, Miss Monica has the in-form Marie King aboard and is sure to be well-supported in the early exchanges. A real headscratcher for punters and one in which the in-form Orpen Quest is offered as the most tenta tive of selections.
