In depth

Verdict

Proponent can beat his main rival Minos, with Only Hope and Above And Below up against it. This really does look a match on paper, and on the evidence of a smooth debut success at Newbury last month, we are prepared to side with Proponent. A 160,000gns yearling, he was not expected to be sharp enough to do what he did first time, but was impressive enough to earn quotes for next year's Vodafone Derby, and has to be kept on the right side. Main opponent Minos was well down the field in the Goffs Million at The Curragh, but was drawn low which did not help, and Richard Hannon's colt, who holds an entry in the Racing Post Trophy, will be better suited by the step back up to a mile. He should give a good account, but faces a smart sort in Proponent who can make it two-out-of-two and enhance his reputation in the process.
