Jack Dawson may prove the answer to a tricky opener in which Kaluana Court, King Flyer and Thewhirlingdervish are the likeliest alternatives. John Berry's charge enjoyed a most profitable campaign last season when landing valuable handicaps at Hamilton and Musselburgh as well as scoring a wide-margin success over hurdles. The son of Persian Bold suffered a setback afterwards but has shown that he retains plenty of ability in two recent starts back on the level. The six-year-old was a strong finishing runner-up behind a well treated rival over an inadequate test of stamina on his belated return at Epsom before running satisfactorily on unsuitable rain-softened ground at Newmarket. The selection will be suited by the step up in trip as well as these faster conditions and is able to race off the same mark as his last success on the Flat so should give a good account. Kaluana Court has been in excellent heart of late having won two of his last three starts but is creeping up the weights and looks worth opposing off his revised mark. King Flyer was successful over course and distance last month but had little to spare at the line and looks vulnerable off a 5lb higher mark while Fortune Island has twice disappointed since landing the Queen's Prize at Kempton in April and is now tried in a first-time visor. Thewhirlingdervish is a consistent type who advertised his well being when runner-up in a competitive event last time so has to be respected but the percentage call goes to Jack Dawson whose turn of foot may prove decisive.
