A competitive heat with three last-time winners and one of them, CAPTAIN McCARRY, is taken to follow-up. Zomerlust, also a last-time scorer, would have seen this lot off comfortably at his 99-rated best, but he is not up to that standard these days, and wins are few and far between. He also appears to have a clear preference for the Knavesmire where he won over this trip in July and we will take him on this time. The resolute My Gacho scored over 7f at Leicester before taking a one mile Brighton handicap last time and the drop back to this trip won't be an issue for a gelding who is versatile regarding trip and ground. His problem here is likely to be a 6lb penalty for that latest victory and he will do well to complete a hat-trick. White Deer looks a little too high in the weights, while Leonid Glow is effective over the trip but might also be in the grip of the assessor. All of that leads us back to the selection, Captain McCarry. Bryan Smart's gelding has to lump around top weight, but there was plenty to like about his win at the hands of Billy Dane at Carlisle, and this trip and fast ground look ideal for him. The nagging doubt with him is that he has not yet managed to follow-up a win, but then nor have most of these and we will take the chance that today can again be his day.
