        Verdict

        An ordinary but wide-open looking handicap, with David Evans' I CONFESS taken to defy top weight status to get the better of Ivory Lace and My Learned Friend. All three on the shortlist are course and distance winners, as are Carlitos Spirit and Napoletano. I Confess won over a mile here last time out when trying the trip again for the first time in a year; he's won off a higher mark than he's on now, but only at slightly shorter trips such as this. He's the yard's only runner on the card, and although top weight, the trainer's son on board with a five pounds claim keeps him competitive. Ivory Lace was taken out of a Goodwood contest yesterday to race here, so connections must feel this provides her with a better opportunity of winning. She's more than paid her way over the years with a dozen wins to her name, albeit her last success was more than 18 months ago. My Learned Friend won this contest a year ago; he followed that up with an immediate success over course and distance but since then hasn't been placed in seven outings. However, the two wins last year came following a pipe-opener, which he's had this time around too. It's a trappy affair though, and we'll support I Confess.
