Today's performance from Cousteau will hardly be the acid test to the form of the Craven Stakes but, he sets a high standard for a race of this nature and it will be surprising if he is not good enough to repel the likes of Red Somerset and Lemon Drop Kid. Frankie Dettori gets the leg up for a rare outing for Sir Michael Stoute aboard Lemon Drop Lad and it will be noteworthy to see how the betting market reacts. The half-brother to Mbosi fared no better than mid-division on his solitary start as a juvenile, so obviously needs to improve. However, he is in the correct hands to be placed to good effect this year and is one to keep tabs on from now on. Red Somerset was tardy from the stalls when he was introduced at Newmarket 12 days ago but stayed on to good effect near the finish. He can have only benefited from the run and, as his stable are flying at present, this son of Red Ransom has to be on the shortlist. However, Cousteau also showed a good attitude in the Craven and will be hard to beat with a similar performance. On a cautionary note, his trainer, Peter Chapple-Hyam, has said he is not the most straightforward worker at home; so cramped odds would not make for the most compelling bet of the day.
