While capable of popping up at a big price as in last season's Fighting Fifth, the Nicky Richards-trained The French Furze has struggled in similar grade since landing an Ayr handicap in November and a safer bet looks to be Inglis Drever, who is preferred to Royal Shakespeare. The selection was a high class novice last year and while yet to get his head in front this term has run some fine races in defeat behind leading Champion Hurdle hopes Harchibald and Back In Front. The softer ground here is of concern but, being by In The Wings, Howard Johnson's gelding should handle it. Steve Gollings' stable star Royal Shakespeare has two lengths to find with the selection on running in the Fighting Fifth and has to be respected, although he is yet to encounter conditions as testing as they are today. Martin Pipe's Copeland would have claims on his best form but at the age of 10 those days are seemingly a long way behind him and of more interest may be Sue Smith's Mister McGoldrick, who reverts to hurdles after a fortuitous success in Wetherby's Castleford Chase last time. Michael Scudamore's Turnium had some decent form in France but faces no easy task on his British debut and is probably best left out of calculations in a race taken to go to Inglis Drever.
