The big race of the day can got to Layman, although Chic and La Vie dei Colori are very much respected among a good line-up. The Godolphin-trained Layman seems to hold the aces here. Second in last season's Group 1 Prix Morny and third in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, he returned for the season with a good Group 3 win at Salisbury from Jack Sullivan. That form, plus official ratings, point us in his direction as the possible winner of this contest. Kandidate looks held on Salisbury form, while Forward Move displayed a liking for this course and distance when scoring in a Listed event last time. He is clearly on the upgrade but more will be needed from him. Chic is the highest rated of these and she took this race last year. She holds solid claims, and you can forgive her latest run because she was struck into during the race. Court Masterpiece holds the edge over Majors Cast based on seven-furlong form here on July 26, although the latter was returning from a break there. Bear in mind also that, working through Jack Sullivan - who was second in that race just referred to - Layman is not a long way ahead of Court Masterpiece. The Sussex Stakes sixth La Vie dei Colori is one to seriously consider too, while Babodana was a fair third in a York Listed event last time and today's going should suit better. Overall, though, narrow preference is for Layman.
