        Verdict

        A modest handicap can go to Brief Goodbye, who is selected ahead of Swainson and Blackmail, who are both respected and have claims at this level. Blackmail is in good heart at present and has already notched three wins this season. He is still on a fair mark and looks sure to go well now that he has proved he can handle the idiosyncrasies of this course. Swainson also put in a good effort over course and distance last month and is entitled to be considered on that run alone. However, he can be hard to get right and is not one to be going overboard about. Therefore, we take our chances with Brief Goodbye, who still has scope for improvement at this trip. The five-year-old has often hinted that a mile and a half will bring the best out of him and he has a solid chance to put the theory to the test this evening.
