Nonrunner
This is a typically competitive looking renewal of the Portland in which several of the 24 runners have claims including the top weight Markab, recent York winner Barney McGrew and the hat-trick seeking pair of Johannes and Jaconet but they may all be a shade high in the weights to win here and preference is for INTREPID JACK. Hughie Morrison's seven-year-old has slipped to a decent mark now having been running creditably in listed and group races over the last year. The son of Compton Place has held his own back in handicaps in his last two starts and, with this extended five furlongs looking an ideal trip for him, Intrepid Jack looks worth chancing. Judge 'n Jury ran well when chasing home Reverence in a Group 3 race at the Curragh last time and will not be inconvenienced by the faster ground today so he has to be considered, while Pavershooz has won three of his last four starts but a 6lb rise for his latest success makes this a tougher assignment for him. Buachaill Dona looks the pick of the three runners in the race trained by David Nicholls ahead of Striking Spirit and Northern Dare and he has claims given the handler's record with his sprint handicappers. Recent Haydock winner Cheveton would probably prefer a softer surface, while Irish challenger Santo Padre has yet to prove that he handles ground this fast but his pedigree suggest that it should not be a problem. There are several others with claims but it is Intrepid Jack that takes the eye and he gets the vote.
