Verdict

Gothenburg, Silk Drum and Sourire are the three to look at here, with the debutant Gothenburg given the nod. Howard Johnson's Silk Drum made a promising debut at Ripon, staying on well in the closing stages behind Mark Johnston's Upper Class, who won well. Silk Drum will improve for the experience, and although the yard is not quite firing on all cylinders, they did have a two-year-old winner with a similar profile at Thirsk two weeks ago. However, presumably Johnston knows where he stands with this one, as he saddles the selection, Gothenburg. A son of Halling, out of a Rahy mare, Gothenburg would not have to be a stable star to win this modest affair, and the yard supplied another two-year-old winner on Friday night. Sourire's backers were not smiling after a tardy start at Wolverhampton cost her any chance. However, she did stay on to good effect, suggesting this longer trip would suit. This is a sharp track though, and she may be better on a more galloping circuit. Gothenburg can make a winning bow.
