In depth

Verdict

St Matthew may be the value to beat Eric's Charm, with Provocative, Kharak and Ashleybank House all interesting enough to mention as well. Although Eric's Charm was the classiest of these over timber, he has yet to jump a fence in public and on this occasion the experience of St Matthew should stand him in good stead. Sue Smith's charge has improved with each outing this term and made all to score easily when put back over fences again at Uttoxeter last time. Granted he did not beat much but the manner of his victory was pleasing and even with a double penalty he is sure to go close. If electing to set off in the lead, he could have most of these in trouble by halfway, and will not go down without a fight. Wherever Eric's Charm finishes today, he will pay to follow over fences. He prefers going right-handed so will like this course and his target is the Henry VIII Novice Chase at Sandown in December. Provocative comes from a top local stable and was successful over hurdles last November. He is sure to have been well schooled, while Kharak stayed on well behind Vandas Choice here recently and will relish the trip. Ashleybank House is a big horse and will be well suited to fences, and so is another to note, but has it to do. All in all, St Matthew represents the value over the high-class Eric's Charm.
