Hogmaneigh can make the most of a light weight, with Fantasy Believer, Bordelescott, Kostar and Mutamared just four more possibles in the usual cavalry charge that is the Ayr Gold Cup. There has already been plenty of support for the Stuart Williams-trained Hogmaneigh this week, and when the money is down, you have to sit up and take notice. Although the three-year-old lacks experience, he has won three out of seven career starts, and ran a blinder in the Portland at York last week to finish third behind Fantasy Believer after missing the break. He can actually line up here on a 3lb lower mark, with a 5lb penalty slapped on for an earlier success, and is 7lb better off with Fantasy Believer for less than four-lengths. The stats are slightly against the latter as well, as no Portland winner has followed up since 1992, but there is no getting away from the fact that John Quinn's charge is at the top of his game at present. Bordelescott just got the better of Mutamared in a thrilling finish to a tight affair at Goodwood that has worked out well. However, the last horse to do the Stewards-Ayr Gold Cup double was Coastal Bluff 10 years ago, so it will be a major feat if he does achieve it. Kostar has had a fairly light campaign with this in mind, and Fonthill Road was only just beaten in this last year, but has been out of form. At first glance, The Kiddykid has plenty of weight, but make no mistake, she has been mixing it with good company, including Reverence, so she is not to be dismissed lightly. However, it is hard to knock the claims of Hogmaneigh who gets the vote under regular rider Saleem Golam.
