In depth

Verdict

Pacific Pride cannot be opposed and should fully justify his short price, with Meaningful the likely one for the forecast. Howard Johnson's juvenile should simply have too much class for his four rivals based on his two runs so far, at Newcastle and York. The form of his debut third at Gosforth Park has already been franked again by the winner Mullaad, and his subsequent second to Red Clubs in the Coventry Stakes puts him light years ahead of today's opposition. This powerfully built colt is still far from the finished article, and could be a live contender for the Gimcrack in August. With that in mind, it will be the shock of the day if he is turned over here, and plenty of big hitters will be steaming in to buy money no doubt. Mark Johnston will at least get a fair measure of Meaningful's improvement judged on the likely proximity between his charge and the favourite. He finished tired when tried over seven furlongs at Warwick but in all probability just needs more time to strengthen up, as he hold a Derby entry so there should not be any stamina doubts as time goes on. The stable introduced Shamardal in this event last year, and the rest is history, but they will surely have to play second fiddle this time to Pacific Pride.
