In depth

Verdict

All but two of these ran in the Goodwood Cup in which Quickthorn was given far too much rope and made all. Hughie Morrison’s gelding had adopted similar front-running tactics when successful over 1m6f here earlier but COLTRANE looks the pick of the weights today. He was third at Goodwood having led the chasing pack and second to Courage Mon Ami in the Ascot Gold Cup in June when in front turning for home. The latter never figured on the Sussex track and finished behind Giavellotto, who won the Yorkshire Cup here in May, but is clearly better than that. Broome has become disappointing and looks held while River Of Stars and Nate The Great are probably a little out of their depth.
