    Verdict

Jewel of India left his juvenile form behind with a nine day hat-trick of wins at Hamilton, Leicester and Southwell in July and has not been disgraced in competitive handicaps since then. This looks much easier. Athenian made a successful debut on sand here in April and followed up on turf at Windsor. He was far from disgraced and not beaten far in a good event at Newmarket latest. Red Wine won at Southwell in January and went down in a photo finish at Warwick on fast ground in June, but is inconsistent. Woodboro Kat confirmed the promise shown when placed here and at Southwell by romping home by eight lengths over a slightly longer trip here recently. Off a 9lb higher mark here, but may well follow up. Retirement scored on this track last September and has been placed in decent company on turf at Newbury and Windsor this summer, so must be reckoned with.
