Verdict
Dual Stayers' Hurdle winner Baracouda is hard to oppose here and is taken to confirm Newbury superiority over Crystal d'Ainay, with Rule Supreme rated the best of the remainder. The selection is one of the best hurdlers of recent times and made a winning start under Tony McCoy when landing the Long Distance Hurdle last month. Crystal d'Ainay has three-quarters of a length to find with Francois Doumen's star on running then but as the nine-year-old was making his reappearance that day there should be more to come and Baracouda can confirm the form. Kadara (third) and It Takes Time (fifth) also take on Baracouda from Newbury but that is more to do with lack of other suitable opportunities rather than a belief that they can reverse form. Nicky Henderson's Geos can never be dismissed lightly but ran no sort of race on his reappearance and a bigger threat may come from Rule Supreme. The Willie Mullins-trained gelding was a Grade 1 winner in France over a similar trip last season and should appreciate the return to further having been short of speed behind the useful Solerina on his most recent start. However, Baracouda sets a decent standard and will be tough to beat.
