In depth

Verdict

Plenary has finished second in four of six starts but his most recent effort in a modest Newcastle maiden suggested he's not progressing as expected and it's no surprise to see first-time headgear applied. Vermeulen, improving on a race-by-race basis, went close the last day when a half-length runner-up to Beauty Sleep at Chelmsford and is sure to be involved but WEST DRIVE makes greater appeal. Roger Varian is still tiptoeing back to form after the ravages of the virus but the stable is clearly in better health and the son of Sea The Stars will prove tough to beat if back to the level of a solid third to Master Blueyes in a competitive York handicap in the spring. Subsequent runs were not too bad either and he's hopefully back to something like his best, with first-time blinkers expected to aid his cause further.
