The meeting gets underway with the most valuable race on the card but few can be seriously fancied. Channahrlie is a notable exception and, despite the dubious distinction of having finished runner-up on his last six starts, is the choice to finally open his account for the season. Robin Dickin's charge has proved a thoroughly reliable and genuine performer and put up a particularly good effort behind a useful yardstick over this trip at Ascot last month. The nine-year-old races off an identical mark here and meets easier opposition, so looks the one to beat with conditions to suit. Homme de Fer has claims if back to the same level of form that saw him score in slightly better grade at Ludlow in November but has twice disappointed since and would be putting up a career best effort to win off his current rating. Native Man was in excellent heart this time last year when picking up three wins from four starts but has been well below his best of late and still looks harshly treated. Irishman made no show on his British debut late last month but failed to handle the testing conditions and is capable of better on his favoured surface.
