This looks quite competitive, just as you would expect for a Derby trial, but it is doubtful any of these will make an impact at Epsom, come the big day. It is something of a surprise to see Magistretti turn out again so soon after his hard race in the Fielden Stakes at the Craven meeting last week. He along with Weavers Pride and Shield hold an entry for the big race, while Tacitus is in the 2000 Guineas. But preference is for Summerland, even though his stable have yet to hit top form. Another to hold an entry at Epsom, he probably had the best form of these as a two-year-old as he showed when just touched off at Saint-Cloud in a Group 1. Magistretti a fine looking colt, is passed over as he may find this coming to quick after Newmarket, while both Weavers Pride and Tacitus look to have something to prove. Mark Tompkins, who hit the target on Wednesday with Franklin Gardens, relies on Inch Again, who looks the sort to do better as a three-year-old, but he does have a lot to find with the best of these. Shield is open to improvement, but he will need to.
