In depth

Verdict

Mainland ran better than his odds suggested he might on debut at Ripon however CHAIN OF EVENTS takes a huge drop in grade and is selected ahead of newcomer Tobernea and the more experienced Tamarillo Grove. Barry Hills doesn't send many to the track but this Nayef gelding should prove hard to beat if reproducing his two-year-old form. So far this year he has failed to fire but his latest run was in a valuable sales race where he was never likely to win and he should relish this easier company. Tamarillo Grove has shaped with promise on both of his starts and should relish this longer trip as there is stamina on his dam's side, Tobernea looks to be starting off at a suitable trip (King's Theatre provides the stamina in the pedigree), whilst Hairy Maclary and Nephele need market checks on their debuts. Enchanting Smile's latest Doncaster run was more promising, whilst Peaceful Rule has been exposed as modest. The decent hurdler Blazing Desert needs a market check despite two modest runs over a mile and a half this year, however the vote goes to Chain Of Events.
