Verdict

ZUIDER ZEE went into many a notebook on his debut and should find this straightforward, in the process accounting for Gay Mirage and Moose Moran, although a market move for Suyoof could spell trouble. Our selection hails from John Gosden's ever in-form stable and is a half-brother to Scandinavian champion Zenato. A £42,000 purchase, plenty was expected on debut and he ran on nicely to take a never-nearer second behind a horse with experience. The hope is he's learned plenty from that and normal improvement should see him strike at the second time of asking with the minimum of fuss, with the switch to turf expected to pose absolutely no problem. Michael Jarvis has started the season well and his Gay Mirage rates the forecast pick. She caught the eye when staying on in midfield when taking to the racecourse for the first time and is another who should step up on that, especially as she's bred to appreciate stepping beyond a mile and should act on this ground. Moose Moran is another likely type from a good yard and Henry Cecil's colt is also to be respected, but his breeding raises serious concerns about this distance and we'll leave him alone on those grounds. Suyoof is closely related to the stable's smart Zaham, a horse who performed to his best at this trip. He's a really interesting newcomer and could be anything, but his closest relatives all came on for their debuts and we hope that's the case with him. Forsyth isn't as flashy as some of these on paper but his yard continue to go well and this step up in trip helps, indeed he'll want further in time, but on balance he's likely to struggle along with the likes of Broctune Papa Gio and Bollin Julie who haven't looked up to this so far. This is an interesting maiden with some top yards represented, but Zuider Zee remains a confident choice to see them off on his second trip to the track.
