Barry Hills won this race last year so he will have a decent idea of what is needed from Effingham, but he may have to settle for second best this time to Mark Johnston, whose Naomh Geileis can take part two of the maiden, while Nickel Silver should go well and Sam's Cross is an interesting newcomer. Naomh Geileis holds Group entries for later in the campaign and her debut effort when just held by Albabilia in a big field maiden at Ascot is easily the best racecrouse form on offer here, so with improvement entirely possible she can score. Effingham ran green to begin with on debut but got the hang of things well and this step up in trip can improve him, so he is respected. Nickel Silver has run two good races in defeat, both at Ripon, though the form of those races has not worked out well and he may have to settle for the frame again. Of the newcomers, Sam's Secret is related to juveniles who won at this trip and Walter Swinburn will have him fit enough to show up well. The market might help us with his chances, but we expect the favourite to be our selection Naomh Geileis.
