In depth

Verdict

ATLAAL looks the obvious shout here, but the market can be a friend to us given the lack of form, and any support, particularly for Lava Lamp or Astrophysical Jet. Atlaal was runner up on debut in a better race than this at Ascot when encountering some trouble in running, and he's got a raft of group entries, but whether he's up to that level remains to be seen. We wouldn't take too short a price on him though, given we've a quartet of debutantes and others open to improvement. Mark Johnston's runners should never be dis-counted, and although Lava Lamp didn't show up particularly well on debut, the yard's charges often improve on their second run, and he's twice changed hands for more than 50,000 Guineas. Astrophysical Jet could be the pick of the newcomers and Ed McMahon's had some good maiden winners this year. She could be anything, and doesn't have any fancy entries at all. Ian Williams' string are in good form, and another debutante Antoella could continue that. On the limited evidence we've seen, Atlaal looks the pick, but it's far from a gimme.
