In depth

Verdict

There is not too much to go on in the opening race on the card but the vote goes to Shatrang who is selected ahead of Night Skier and Patio. The betting might provide your best guide in trying to name the winner of this race but, being by Royal Applause out of Machiavellian mare - she is also a half-sister to the quite useful Mutafanen - Ed Dunlop's filly looks one of the more likely types here based on breeding. As does Amanda Perrett's Patio, who showed some promise on soft going on her debut. A few of the others have to get mentions, including Sir Mark Prescott's Lady Calido, Mick Channon's Leading Edge, and John Dunlop's Night Skier, who have all shown promise. Sand Maiden has likeable breeding but was cheaply acquired, while John O'Shea's 38,000 euros purchase as a foal, Xaravella, has something to like on breeding so gets a mention. Finally, Rio Rocket showed promise at Haydock last time, although that run came in a claimer so, once again, for the selection, we return to Shatrang, but the advice is to keep an eye on the betting.
