In depth
Verdict
Pearly Poll has leading claims and is taken to open her account at the second time of asking, with Makai, The City Kid and Phone In set to give her most to do. The first five races on the card are all juvenile events as connections try to get a run into their charges before winter hibernation, but one that could be seen over the winter is Pearly Poll, a half-sister to the useful Bishop's Finger. The latter acted well on the Polytrack and if Pearly Poll scores today, trainer Ralph Beckett will surely be tempted to keep his filly busy rather than put her away. The daughter of Primo Dominie shaped like a future winner when making her debut here at the end of September, finishing second to Queen's Pudding, with subsequent scorer Enrichetta back in third. That form looks good enough for her to make a successful return visit and she gets the vote over Makai. Mark Johnston's gelding has the experience but did not seem to like the soft ground here a fortnight ago and may again be found wanting. The City Kid is fully exposed even at this early stage of her career, while Phone In may be best watched until he gets a handicap mark, given his trainer's style. All in all, as long as Pearly Poll acts on the ground, she has the most potential and should pay to follow.
